Facial thread veins
These can be very disfiguring. They are usually associated with sun and wind exposure and are common in people with out-door occupations. They are very different from the thread veins and spider veins that appear on the legs. Ultrasound examination of the veins is not required.
In our opinion, short wave diathermy (or electro-coagulation as it is sometimes called) is a very effective method for the treatment of thread veins and spider veins on the face. A very fine needle is used to prick the skin and then pass an electrical current through the vein which is heated and sealed. Over the course of a few weeks, the vein withers and disperses and becomes much less noticeable. A mild anaesthetic cream is used to numb the area prior to treatment.
After treatment the skin may be pink or puffy in more sensitive areas but this will settle in a few hours. During the summer months, you should consider using a good quality sunscreen while the treated areas are healing.
Although the facial veins may disappear immediately, a healing process takes place and the final results will be apparent 4 to 6 weeks after treatment.
