Surgery
For some people, surgery is still appropriate. It is undertaken as walk in walk out procedure under local anaesthetic.
Surgery is carried out with precision techniques and delicate instruments, which offer excellent cosmetic results. The techniques used by The Melbury Vein Clinic are associated with high patient satisfaction rates. Each operation is tailored to the precise pattern of reflux identified by the ultrasound scan. Early diagnosis and treatment ensure that the condition is not allowed to deteriorate.
In our opinion, large varicose veins very close to the surface of the skin are best treated by a procedure called “phlebectomy”. Excellent cosmetic results are achieved very quickly. The skin is numbed by local anaesthetic, very much like a dentist’s injection, and a micro-incision is made in the skin, slightly larger than a needle prick. Through this micro-incision, the unsightly veins are removed using special micro-instruments. The skin micro-incision is closed with paper tape and no stitches are needed. The leg is bandaged for a few days and a stocking is worn. The recovery time after phlebectomy is very short and usually normal activities can be resumed in a few hours.
